Vodoun, Bénin

Vodou is a religion that encompasses a wide range of practices, rituals and beliefs. It’s native to West Africa.

Far from the clichés of cinema and popular culture of recent years, this spirituality is based on the sacralization of the forces of nature and ancestors. It seeks to answer the great human questions of the essence of life.

For the followers, the balance between the visible world (animals, plants, humans) and the invisible world (deities, ancestors) is essential. Communication is done by divination, singing, dancing and objects, promoting the development of all.

In fon, "Vo" means purification and at ease, "Doun" evokes drawing and extracting. Thus, "vodoun" means to purify oneself to tap into the invisible and flourish in the physical world.

Vodou, practiced in several countries, including Benin, offers a rich and complex pantheon. My photoreportage visually explores rituals, revealing the mystical soul of this tradition. Each image testifies to spiritual depth, capturing unique moments. The goal is to share an authentic perspective, transcending stereotypes.
